Late Game Heroics Push Street Force into Championship

The rivalry between the Reapers and the Street Force is a tale as old as time, except this is not a Disney movie and none of these players look like Disney princesses. These teams have met twice in the regular season, splitting the series at a win apiece. Top scorers for each team were Ryan Reich for the Reapers and Jack Edgecombe of the Street Force to absolutely nobody’s surprise.

The first period had no goals which allowed both goalies a moment in the sun. Paul Mistler had robbed Jon Ireland at point blank range to keep the game scoreless roughly 4 minutes into the first. John Wolfe stood on his head with some incredible saves to also keep the first period scoreless. Both goalies were determined to not be the reason their team lost.

The second period is when things finally opened for either team. Last Man In All-Star Mel Lewis showed why he was an all-star and led the scoring for the Reapers with a bouncy one-time shot. Street Force team captain Chris Vallely tried to block the shot as he always does, but this time, it bounced in off him at 7:12 of the second. The lead was short-lived, however, as Reich took the first penalty of the game at 11:13. On the powerplay, the usual suspects of BJ Goodwin, Vallely and Edgecombe teamed up for the game-tying goal at 12:08 in the second.

Entering the third, the game stayed relatively tight with the tension building for a potential playoff overtime session. But everyone knows that even though this is not a Disney movie, it has to end like one, right? With a minute or so left in regulation, captain Vallely took a timeout to rally the troops. Season on the line, leave it all out there, you know Miracle on Ice-type speech. And whatever was said in that huddle, something must have clicked. Five seconds left in regulation, Edgecombe decided to shoot as the spectators had been bugging him about all game and quite frankly, all season. 2-1 Street Force.

While it was a heartbreaking loss for the Reapers, their season and team deserve incredible recognition for always playing with grit and going till the last whistle. It may have not been their season, but it deserves to be said that they have all the pieces and can only get better and scarier from here. Wolfe is not a goalie I would willingly want to face because of how determined he always is to beat his opponent. Their scoring core is some of the most consistent and with time, can only get better.

We look to the B division championships between Street Force and Tropical Depression on Sunday, April 10th at 1:15pm to determine this season's champ.
